The Elements of Google Tag Manager
There are three main elements in Google Tag Manager: Tags, Triggers, and Variables.
Tags can be created from Google Universal Analytics tags, Google Ads remarketing code, Facebook pixels, or other sources. Google Tag Manager uses pre-built integrations with third-party tools like Crazyegg, Hotjar, and LinkedIn or you can use custom HTML script tag types or a custom-built tag template.
Triggers tell Google Tag Manager when to turn on the script, or “fire”. Tags require different triggers based on the information they are trying to gather. Google Tag Manager features several pre-built triggers like page view and link clicks, or you can create your own custom event trigger.
Variables work within tags and triggers to provide additional information to ensure they work. When using the Google Analytics tag, create a variable using Google Analytics or Google Analytics 360 tracking IDs.
